In the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), countless professionals dedicate their careers to profoundly impacting the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities. Sarah M. has set forth a remarkable journey at Burnett Therapeutic Services, evolving from her beginnings as a dedicated Behavior Interventionist to her current role as Quality Assurance Director. In her current role, she supports our staff and families served to ensure optimal care delivery. She oversees concerns raised by both families and staff, facilitating discharge or transfer requests and reviewing incident reports as needed. Her responsibilities also include training and supporting the team to maintain and improve the quality of care provided. Her contributions are pivotal in ensuring a supportive and effective environment for all involved.
With much experience in various capacities—including being a Supervisor, BCBA/Program Director, and Clinical Director—Sarah embodies a deep commitment to enhancing the lives of clients and supporting her team. Her path into Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) was unexpected; initially considering a career in Occupational Therapy, Sarah discovered ABA working as a Behavior Interventionist. When she found BTS, she was captivated by its potential to shape children’s behavior and help families. Her role as a Behavior Interventionist was guided by a supportive mentor, Amy M., current Director of Operations at BTS, and Mitze B., whose influence continues to shape Sarah's approach to care and leadership. She finished her graduate school in ABA and continued her education and career.
When asked to define ABA in three words, Sarah chose "collaboration, creative, and genuine." These words resonate deeply with her approach to therapy and leadership. Collaboration, for Sarah, is key to achieving holistic and effective interventions involving clients, families, and a multidisciplinary team. Creativity is evident in her problem-solving strategies and engaging therapeutic activities tailored to each client's unique strengths and challenges. At the bottom line of every interaction lies genuine care that involves establishing trust and rapport for meaningful, long-term impact. She emphasizes the importance of supporting each client's authenticity individually. Furthermore, she finds it genuinely FUN, adding an element of enjoyment to her work.
Sarah's vision for BTS revolves around providing unwavering support to her team and the families they serve. Her goal is to ensure that every individual receives the highest quality of care and experiences genuine happiness and success. By cultivating a culture of collaboration, commitment, and joy within her team, Sarah believes they can achieve remarkable outcomes that benefit not just clients but also the broader community and the field of ABA. Her dedication to continuous improvement and her genuine passion for her work inspire those around her to strive for excellence.
Outside of work, Sarah loves spending time with her family—her husband, energetic twins, 6-month-old daughter, and playful dog. They enjoy swimming, dancing, and exploring new adventures together, and recently, Sarah has added sand volleyball to her list of hobbies. These moments of relaxation and connection with loved ones recharge her and provide balance amidst her professional responsibilities.
Sarah's advice to aspiring BCBAs is based on her journey of growth and learning.
